i think its already time to move to an individualized 1-blog-per-webpage style. i keep like having to debate myself on how i want to do edits/additions cause i dunno how i feel about just adding to or editing previous posts, and i mean its not really a problem probably? but it doesnt feel right idk. so ill probably sort that out soonish, add a list of posts on the main index page, maybe make it searchable if i can figure that out, i think ill like archive this page and break out the posts ive made sofar into their own pages. adding to and editing them if they need it. maybe ill do like one page per project/device. idk yet

so i mean specs wise its nothging crazy, the dedicated GPU is a nice addition, i at least makes minecraft run pretty well (completely forgor to look at what fps but just looking at the specs that should be expected :3). though as expected for a workstation replacement style laptop, battery life under load is pretty poor, while playing minecraft the battery estimate went from ~2 hours to 45 minutes. with the laptop just sitting idle and doing some minor web browsing i got about 3 hours of life before it died. this is (of course) in Debian 13 because im just like that.

originally the plan was to use this to test if i could do my work stuff entirely on linux, but as it turns out i recently aquired a decently recent 500GB m.2 SSD, i got a little enclosure for it and ive cloned the install over to that drive, ill just make the work puter boot from that for a while. actually, i think the only thing that presently woulfnt be possible on linux is our remote access tool, but thats because we have not compiled a linux version yet and shouldnt be too hard to do

that aside, Passmark scores for this CPU are super weird, very skewed because of some very low results. despite being above the average, my specific cpu is a bit behind the rest of the pack. i was told it was repasted within the last couple years and it doesnt seem to be throttling super easily, so im pretty tempted to believe that.

i have no idea why passmark thinks the CPU is at 7 MHz but

well with me now having a better solution for workplace linux, im really not too sure what to do with this thing. i mean the I/O is absolutely awesome i could do pretty much anything i wanted with this. the only real hurdle is the absolute MASS of this thing, well that and its battery life isnt great. i suspect it might make a great (cant say little) portable emulation machine. I have run PCSX2 on weaker hardware with... respectable, results and having a dedicated GPU would probably kick it up to being genuinely enjoyable to play on. ill have to try it and maybe ill update on how well it goes.

as you can see there is an INSANE amount of espansion in this thing. Dell was NOT fucking around lmao. they really made sure to justify the absolute girth of this thing with expansion slots and cards. hell, both the GPU and CPU are slotted/socketed. it looks like it would be a pain in the rear to actually replace either of those but it is awesome that its possible.

*that half size minipcie slot was originally for a dedicated encryption accelerator, those seem to be very rare and mine, does not have one. i have seen online that it will apparently work as just a normal minipcie slot,just using some adapters to get like an m.2 ssd to fit

actually, i havent even mentioned the coolest part yet. in the pictures, in the battery bay, youll see a little yellow sticker that says "ME Disabled", and yes, that is Intel ME (Intel Management Engine) Disabled from the factory. this was apparently in its previous life in an ITAR compliant enviornment and was ordered, specifically with Intel ME disabled. which is a huge privacy W, its definitely my favorite feature of this specific laptop.

i dont know that there is that much more to say about this thing. overall its a ginormous, heavy, incredibly expandable workstation replacement. im excited to all what its capable of, i think ill start with ps2 emulation maybe :3 anyway, here are some of the pics ive taken sofar, the rest will be in the gallery probably

Thinkpad X61!! yeah pictures and stuff later, specs now. my x61 came to me with:

it actually was not in the Ebay listing but it did come with Middleton's BIOS installed. Also not mentioned in the listing, the 8 Cell battery that came with it is completely borked. i can still see it in the OS and it still shows that there is a charge but it refuses to discharge at all. apparently these things have some very sensitive battery management systems thatll immediately brick the battery if there is ever an overtemp or the battery is discharged too much.

unfortunately with that battery being bricked, it doesnt look like there is any rebuilding it possible, which was the original plan but, ive just ordered a cheap aftermarket one so i can use it unteathered. While i was at it i also ordered 8 GiB (2x4 GiB) RAM, no real reason but the hope is itll improve the experience web browsing.

on the topic of stuff im doing to the thinkpad, i went ahead and installed Debian 13 (Trixie). originally i had planned to use something like TinyCore or Puppy Linux but with the 2 GiB of ram, somehow... loading your entire OS into RAM doesnt work out so well if you want to do anything on it x3. after this, mind boggling revealation, i installed Debian 13 to a newish (2022) 1TB HDD. i dont know if im just spoiled on booting from SSDs (definitely) or what, but debian was really chugging. i figured."hey ive got that one SSD im not really using ill just clone this hard drive to it"... yeah so that didnt work, i spent like 3 hours fucking with it but i just could not get it to boot on the SSD.

eventually i stopped being a baby and just reinstalled Debian to the "new" SSD which i should have done in the first place. transfered my dot files to my newly configured SMB, and then pulled them down once Debian was finished installing. obligatory fetch below

now, last things first cause im difficult like that. that sim card slot, i have no idea how to use, there isnt another card inside that appears to be for cell, nor was there any extra antenna cables sitting in there. so i guess they put the slots on all of them but not any way to use it? idk. anyway! definitely neat to have something that has firewire now, thoughts of cheap old camcorders float through my mind and i can feel my wallet getting lighter. that pcmcia slot is also neat, i kinda doubt there would be anything for that slot i could actually be bothered to buy? but maybe ill see something cool, if i do itll probably end up on here lmao.

last is just my thoughts on this little guy i guess, really its been pretty fun to play with sofar. the ThinkLight is really charming and honestly suprisingly effective. i love the keyboard, i wont go sofar as to say i like it more than my Let's Note but i mean... its pretty close. also, having never used a trackpoint before? its really not as bad as i thought it would be to get used to, i already find myself reaching for it on the Let's Note lmao. It was actually really jarring after playing with XP for a bit, moving to Puppy Linux and the scroll button not working correctly without configuration. i was definitely suprised how quickly i could get used to it. though, now that i think about it i do also tend to try to use circulat scrolling on laptops that definitely do not have circular trackpads lmao

ive had this for a sec mostly just testing the format to see if i like it. Anyway!!!!!!!!!!! i love this silly little thing, silly little 12 inch laptop, relatively modern specs. way more performance than i actually need on the go. Anyway heres some specs:

aside from the specs, its nice in other ways too! like its in a nice, very rigid, all* magnesium alloy chassis. i say all* because its like 99% magnesium alloy, i dont think the screen bezel is but, the back cover definitel is since ive seen those dented before x3. it has a very pretty 1920 x 1200 IPS display, which, i mean, for only being 12 inches diagonally is more than high enough res :3. i havent really tested it in direct sun? but from the bit i have spent outside its definitely a little on the dimmer side, but well more than bright enough for indoors. especially at night i keep blowing up my retinas at a quarter brightness lmao.

and like all of that is before you even look at the thing. like, god i love the aesthetics :3 i love how it looks like this thing was designed 20 years ago. which actually! isnt too far off, apparently panasonic has been using this same chassis/chassis style forever now with their Let's Note line, only recently moving to something more modern.

its stuff like, how the keyboard is nearly at the edge of the body or the exra space given to the arrow keys, the row of 5 status LEDs on the front, or my favorite part the CIRCULAR TRACKPAD. which, after a tiny bit of configuration, you can use circular scrolling (thank you ArchWiki)
